Orik took leadership of the dwarven forces during Eragon's War, and was later made king of the dwarves. Under his leadership, the dwarves' relationship with the other races has improved, increasing trade among other things, and a sort of renaissance has touched all the dwarf clans. Even those who dislike him based on his clan or his relationship to the riders still respect him as a leader for his victories against Galbatorix's forces and for what he's done for the race.
Islanzadi remained queen of the elves during Eragon's War. Now, with both Arya and Edrir not looking like they'll ever take the elven throne, other noble houses are beginning to look for the queen's favor.
As the Varden merged into Surda, so to did Nasuada eventually marry Orrin. They have ruled well for many years now, and Surda prospers, especially thanks to trade with the dwarves and the elves.
This situation in what was once Galboatorix's Kingdom is much less steady. Eragon and Arya, after having deposed Galbatorix, helped write the laws for the Broddring Republic. The current system of government is a set of seven councils, six regional and one national, each council consisting of 25-35 members representing where they come from, cities and their surrounding areas being represented based on relative population.
The Councils:
--The National Council (35 members)
----One (1) representative from each of the folowing cities/areas: Bullridge, Daret, Doru Areaba, Furnost, Melain, Narda, Therinsford, Yazuac, and the northern plains.
----Two (2) representatives from each of the following cities: Aroughs, Ceunon, Feinster, Kausta
----Three (3) representatives from each of the following cities: Belatona, Dras-Leona, Gil'ead, Tierm
----Six (6) representatives from the capital (Ilirea) and the central plains reigon
----Meets in Ilirea
For every member a city has on the national council, it has five in its regional council.
--The North Alagaeisan Council (25 members)
----Includes the cities Ceunon, Daret, Therinsford, and Yazuac, with the surrounding areas
----Meets in Ceunon
--The Seaboard Council (35 members)
----Includes the cities Doru Areaba, Kausta, Narda, and Teirm, with the surrounding areas
----Meets in Teirm
--The North Plains Council (25 members)
----Includes the cities Bullridge and Gil'ead, as well as the small plains settlements between them, with the surrounding areas
----Meets in Gil'ead
--The South Plains Council (30 members)
----Includes the city Ilirea and the small plains settlements of the surrounding areas
----Meets in Ilirea
--The Leona Lake Council (30 members)

----Meets in Belatona
--The South Alagaeisan Council (30 members)
----Includes the cities Aroughs, Feinster, Furnost, and Melian, with the surrounding areas

Choosing council members and council leaders is as follows:
--Current area council members are nobles and war heroes from the towns they represent.
--Area councils (once solidified) would choose people, NOT from the area council, to be the representatives at the national council.
--National representatives must be human.
--Every other year, the members of each council elect who will be thier figurehead.
--Riders (or their representatives) are NOT allowed to sit on any councils, absolutely no exceptions.
